Exemptions

Under Virginia law, certain physicians may be exempt from paying the annual physician assessment. There are five qualifying exemptions:

To claim an exemption, submit the exemption form during the assessment process.

1. Government Employment

Physicians employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the federal government whose income from professional fees is less than 10% of their annual salary.

2. Graduate Medical Educations

Physicians enrolled in a full-time graduate medical education program accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education.

3. Retirement from Active Practice

Physicians who have retired from active clinical practice.

4. Volunteer Services Only

Physicians whose active clinical practice is limited to providing voluntary, uncompensated care to patients at a clinic that delivers health care services at no charge.

5. No Practice in Virginia

Physicians who do not practice medicine in Virginia.
